The History of Pittsburgh Chemical Day
Previous Keynote Speakers
In Memory of Aurthor L. Morgan (Co-Founder of Pittsburgh Chemical Day) April 2, 1919 – August 18, 2007
Arthur L. Morgan was a retired Major in the U.S. Army and a WW II Veteran. He worked as a Purchasing Agent for PPGIndustries from 1948 to 1983.
Late in 1967, at a luncheon date with Harry Pugh of Monsanto, Art Morgan brought up the idea of exploring and planningfor a joint dinner for the Chemical Sales Association of Pittsburgh and the newly formed Pittsburgh Area Purchasing Group. The First Pittsburgh Chemical Day was held at the Chatham Center with the attendance being 203. As it grew, it was moved to the William Penn Hotel in 1973, finally ending up at the Pittsburgh Hilton in 1979. It reached a record attendance of 1520 in 1990. Since company acquisitions and down-sizing began in the mid-1990’s, the last five years has seen an average of 750 in attendance. Even with this change, Pittsburgh Chemical Day is the second highest attended single day event for the City of Pittsburgh.
We thank Art Morgan and Harry Pugh for having the vision to move forward.
